Make your own Chili Powder

Homemade chili powder

Imagine that you are making chili. You have your beans all ready and your ground beef is browning nicely. The onions and garlic are chopped, but wait you need some chili powder. You yank open your spice cabinet and Oh NO! There isn’t any there, but relax you can mix chili powder from spices you probably already have.

  • 1 TSP Paprika
  • 2 TSP ground cumin
  • 1 TSP Cayenne pepper
  • 1 TSP Oregano
  • 2 TSP garlic powder

Just put ingredients in a bowl and stir around to mix. It makes about 2-1/3 TBSPs of chili powder. If you want to make more just double or triple the measurements. You can add more cayenne pepper to make it spicier if that is what you want.

You can get creative with this adding various other spices. If you happen to have dried ground chilies you can add those in instead of the cayenne. You could also get a little wild and add some cinnamon. It’s easy to customize.

You can store this in an old spice container you might have. Just make sure you label it you don’t want to make a mistake later.
